LIV Golf's Sergio Garcia teases sensational PGA Tour return
Sergio Garcia appeared to welcome the idea of returning to the PGA Tour and competing in the Ryder Cup after a deal was agreed with LIV Golf's backers.
Sergio Garcia says he would welcome a return to the PGA Tour if LIV Golf were to disband.
Garcia was speaking ahead of the forthcoming US Open in what will be the first major that is played after a deal was struck between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf's Saudi backers.
The players, understandably, are being asked their thoughts about what this means for the future of men's professional golf.
Matthew Fitzpatrick was asked if 'loyal' PGA Tour stars should be financially compensated for turning down huge deals but was prevented from offering his response.
Meanwhile a bombshell report has suggested some stars are considering fresh legal action.
One thing is clear though: nobody really knows anything.
Garcia, 43, also suggested that he too doesn't really know what's going to happen.
Though in comments to Sky Sports' Jamie Weir he contended the PGA Tour should have partnered with Saudi Arabia's PIF in the first place.
He would also welcome the idea of returning to the PGA Tour and European DP World Tour should that door swing open.
"I mean, if there is no LIV Golf I have to go somewhere," the Spaniard said at Los Angeles Country Club.
Asked about what he knows, Garcia said:
So would he welcome a return to the PGA Tour?
Garcia added:
The 2017 Masters champion famously was filmed ranting that he 'couldn't wait to leave this tour' at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship after he got hosed by a ruling.
In the time since Garcia has been one of the higher-profile players to have clashed with his home circuit and the media.
He also caught the headlines for withdrawing from the BMW PGA Championship, citing no reason, before he was pictured 24 hours later at a college football game.
His decision to join LIV Golf has meant Europe will be without their record points scorer at this September's Ryder Cup.
Garcia has also reportedly refused to pay the £100,000 fine that was imposed by the DP World Tour for playing in the inaugural LIV event last June.
It has been suggested by this report the legal fees so far for the PGA Tour and DP World Tour have totalled approximately $75m.
Still, Garcia would welcome a return to the Ryder Cup if he is permitted to re-join the DP World Tour.
"It doesn't look like I'll be able to do it this year unfortunately," he added.
"I guess, it's all speculation at the moment but in the next few weeks we'll find out more things."
