Faultless Rory McIlroy sets up glorious three-peat opportunity at Canadian Open
Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood will go head-to-head in the final round of the Canadian Open.
Rory McIlroy will duke it out with Tommy Fleetwood in the final round of the Canadian Open at Oakdale Golf & Country Club.
Northern Ireland's McIlroy will attempt to win this event for the third year in a row.
The 34-year-old carded a flawless third round 66 to set up a heavyweight showdown with his Ryder Cup teammate in Toronto.
England's Fleetwood, who is yet to taste victory on the PGA Tour, earlier posted an 8-under 64 to move to 12-under for the championship alongside the Ulsterman.
"I felt like the leaderboard's been very, very bunched up, so just staying hanging around sort of over those first two days was important," Fleetwood said.
He added: "[I] got a great round going today and you just have to go out and enjoy those days when they come. I drove it great, I put myself in position all day and managed to convert, which is a lovely feeling."
CT Pan, Nick Taylor, Mark Hubbard, Justin Rose, Harry Higgs, Andrew Novak, Corey Conners, Brandon Wu and Aaron Rai are also in contention.
Tyrrell Hatton was in prime position heading into the weekend but cut a frustrated figure, going backwards in his third round.
McIlroy started his week with a 1-under 71 after his uncomfortable press conference shortly after it was announced the PGA Tour had partnered with the Saudi backers of their LIV Golf rival.
PGA Tour boss Jay Monahan has now revealed why he caved in a tense meeting with his staff.
"I still hate LIV and hope it goes away," McIlroy said. He fired a 5-under 67 on Friday before his faultless round on Saturday.
McIlroy made birdies at No. 3, 5 and 8 before finding three birdies in a row from the 11th.
The World No. 3 is searching for his 24th PGA Tour title.
