American team has "p****d off guys" heading into Presidents Cup singles
Xander Schauffele was one of America's most annoyed players after falling victim to the International side's fightback on day three of the Presidents Cup.
Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth summarised the mood America were in after day three of the Presidents Cup after the International side cut a six-point deficit to just four.
Speaking after the Saturday four-balls, Schauffele was frustrated at the US side getting beat 3-1 in this session. He and Patrick Cantlay were beaten on the final hole by Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim.
This was the pair's first defeat of the week. Having won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans together earlier this year, Schauffele and Cantlay inflicted a crushing 6&5 defeat in the first match of the event on Thursday against Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott.
They beat Matsuyama and Tom Kim 3&2 in the Friday four-balls, but they fell victim to Kim's superb play at Quail Hollow yesterday evening which helped the International side bring the score to 11-7 ahead of the Sunday singles.
Schauffele will play against Corey Conners in the singles and he was one of the players that US captain Davis Love III referred to as "pretty mad."
"I usually, you know, give myself a little bit of time. I don't play very well p****d off. I play like a toddler when I'm p****d off. So I play my best when I'm focused and, you know, very present," Schauffele said.
"So, you know, use tonight, get rid of it, sit in an ice bath until I can't feel my body, and then I guarantee I won't be p****d off anymore.
"I was dragging ass all day. I'll be the first one to say it. I'm assuming Pat said it, since he's pretty straightforward, at some point to his caddie. He never said it to me, obviously, because he's a good partner. He was carrying me all day."
The Olympic gold medallist may have been harsh on himself. He won the par-3 4th hole with a nice birdie on Saturday afternoon and he also made a birdie on 15 to take the Americans 1 up with three to play.
However, losing the match 1 down from that point is presumably the source of Schauffele's anger. Jordan Spieth also commented on the American mood in North Carolina.
"The roars are really fun here. When you get around that water from 11 through 15, with the routing, it's pretty cool and will be even more so tomorrow when you have six or seven groups at one time around that area," Spieth said.
"So I think, you know, if anything, we got to refocus, and we've got a lot of p****d off guys that want to come out really strong tomorrow."
Spieth and his partner Justin Thomas have earned four points out of a possible four so far at the Presidents Cup. Spieth will take on Cam Davis in the second singles match out, while Thomas will play in the top match against Si Woo Kim.
The impressive duo have the chance to make history later today. If they both win their matches, it will be the first time a team has had two players earn the maximum five points at the tournament.
