The Open: David Duval plays the WRONG BALL and gets a 13 on the 7th
Former Open Champion David Duval plays the wrong ball on the par-5 7th and finishes with a 13.
Just when we thought Rory McIlroy had endured the worst hole of the day, David Duval steps up with a 'hold my beer' moment and scores a 13 on the par-5 7th hole at Royal Portrush, after playing the wrong ball.
David Duval won the Open back in 2001 at Royal Lytham & St Annes and got off to a great start in his first round today at Royal Portrush, starting with two birdies.
Things took a turn for the worst at the par-4 5th, where Duval suffered a quadruple bogey with a nasty eight. Two holes later at the 7th and things really got rough for 47 year old.
It turns out that Duval played the wrong ball, meaning he was hit with a two-shot penalty, extending his shocking score to a 13. Duval is currently 14 over par through 11 holes.
Oh well," said Sir Nick Faldo when learning of the score. "We've seen a lot today."
There certainly have been some big scores today and with the weather likely to get even worse this afternoon, Duval's stinker won't be the last.
