WATCH: Golfer hits unforgettable first tee shot at the Old Course
The first hole at the Old Course has one of the widest fairways in golf, but as one unfortunate golfer found out recently, it doesn't make the tee shot any easier.
The opening tee shot at the iconic Old Course at St. Andrews should be a memorable moment in any golfer's life. Sadly, for one man recently, it was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.
Measuring 129 yards wide, the first fairway at the Old Course is without a doubt one of the widest in golf. Despite this, ask anyone who's played it, and they'll likely tell you it's one of the most nerve-wracking tee shots anywhere in the world.
The birthplace of the game of golf, steeped in history and host to The Open 30 times, the Old Course has a certain aura that is impossible to replicate.
And if that wasn't enough, large crowds like to assemble in front of the historic R&A clubhouse to watch everyone hit their first shot.
Walking in the footsteps of every legend to have ever played the game, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the first tee shot is a truly momentous occasion. Or, at least, it should be.
For one unlucky golfer, the nerves appeared to get too much, and he produced a shot that would be hard to replicate even if he tried.
In an even worse twist of fate, his friend recorded the whole thing and shared it online for the whole world to see.
Check out the shot below:

It's hard to tell whether it was a feathered touch with the toe of the club or a cold, hard hosel rocket, but either way, the ball ends up out of bounds, narrowly missing onlookers to the right of the tee box.
It's honestly a brutal outcome for the poor bloke and one that will sadly follow him for the rest of his life.
Since the video was posted by Tom @culley999 on X, it has been shared countless times across social, with numerous people commenting with sympathetic remarks, while others took the opportunity to relive their own first tee horrors from the iconic course.
