UK golf club in dilemma as its course lies in both England and Wales

A UK golf club is facing a dilemma as to what to do with its club this week as some of its holes are in England and some of its holes are in Wales - the latter of which is going into a 17-day "firebreak" lockdown due to the Covid pandemic on Friday.

Llanymynech Golf Club, the club in question, sees some of its course officially in Shropshire, England, and the rest of its course in Powys, Wales. The only road leading up to the course is in England. 

Officials at the club are now having to hold talks to understand whether to remain open or closed to the public. 

It is understood from an article in the Shropshire Star this week that Llanymynech Golf Club could remain open, but the clubhouse will close due to it being licensed by Powys County Council.

"We are a member of the England Golf Union and therefore abide by its rules," said Sandy Johnstone, who is on the the club's committee.

He added: "It may be that we shall have to close the clubhouse but keep the course open.

"That is what we did when it was decided that golf courses could reopen. We are holding meetings this week to talk through the situation and the best way to deal with it."

What is definite, however, is that everyone in Wales has been told to stay at home under the new national lockdown rules. 

The 17-day lockdown will apply to everyone living in Wales and will supersede all local restrictions currently in place.

"Golf and tennis clubs will be required to close during the period of the lockdown," said the Welsh Government. 

The clear stay at home message means that all non-essential retail and leisure are to close during this lockdown period.
