Tiger Woods selects himself as a captain's pick for the Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup hasn't seen a playing captain compete since Hale Irwin represented the USA in 1994, but after a 25 year wait, we will now witness Tiger Woods compete in Melbourne as a playing captain against Ernie Els' Resot of the World side.

After eight players automatically qualified for the Presidents Cup, there was a lot of talk about which four players Tiger Woods would select as his captain's picks.

Names such as Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, Kevin Kisner, Tony Finau, Kevin Na, the list goes on, Woods was spoilt for choice. The main debate was whether Woods should pick himself as a playing captain.

Some believed that Woods shouldn't pick himself due to not being fit and so that he could take his role as captain more seriously, but after winning the ZOZO Championship, the chances of Woods picking himself increased even more.

It seems as though Woods couldn't ignore his current form, as on Thursday, the 15-time major champion announced his four captains picks, which included himself as a playing captain.

Woods also picked Tony Finau, Gary Woodland and Patrick Reed, adding to the eight automatic players of Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Xander Schaufele, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson and Bryson DeChambeau.

Rickie Fowler seemed an obvious choice for Woods, having played in four Ryder Cups, his match play experience could have been crucial, but Fowler wasn't picked, most likely due to the fact he has taken some time away from the golf course to get married.
