Jordan Spieth pulls out of Sony Open with illness
Jordan Spieth has withdrawn himself from this week's Sony Open due to illness.
Jordan Spieth has been the shell of the player we are used to seeing over the last year. The 11-time PGA Tour winner hasn't won a tournament since winning The Open in 2017, yes that's right, 2017.
When Spieth started to dominate the sport back in 2015, we thought we were looking at a player who would be at the top for years to come, but since his Open victory at Royal Birkdale, Spieth has struggled to find the form that we all know he is capable of.
Last year was a disappointing year for the American, with his best finish coming at the PGA Championship when he finished T3. The 26-year-old only managed five top 10's in the calendar year and Tiger Woods opted not to select him as a captain's pick for the Presidents Cup.
Spieth - currently 43rd in the world rankings - played his final tournament of 2019 at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas where once again he was left disappointed with his performance, finishing in 16th place out of an 18-man field.
After a challenging year for the 2015 FedEx Cup champion, Spieth was still confident that 2020 would be a much more positive year.
“I'm actually really confident about what 2020 holds for me,” Spieth said following the Hero World Challenge.
“I feel things starting to get on the right track, it's just timing stuff and again some visuals … The toughest part is kind of trying to wrap my brain around where things are, thinking so much about the swing over the last year … like constantly thinking about how to get it back on track.
“I see light at the end of the tunnel to where I could be able to just feel like I'm in control of the club the whole time, like it's in front of me and I don't feel like I have to save it every shot.”
Spieth was scheduled to return for the Sony Open in Honolulu this week, but has withdrawn with a cold and is now expected to return to action for the Farmers Insurance Open on the 23-26 January.
