Jason Day targets World No.1 after winning Farmers Insurance Open

Jason Day is targeting a return to world number one after ending a 20-month winless streak at the Farmers Insurance Open with playoff victory over Alex Noren.

Day, a former world number one, moves up to 10th from 14th following his 11th PGA Tour title and first triumph since the 2016 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

The Australian has battled a tough time off the course over the past couple of years with his mother, Dening, battling lung cancer, and on it with a niggling back injury which still continues to give him grief.

“I know that last year wasn’t the greatest season for me,” said Day. “I had stuff off course that was a little distracting with my mother obviously having cancer. It’s special, because I worked very hard in the off-season to try to get back to this position.

“Going back to earlier this week, I never thought I was actually going to play because of my back. Just very thankful for my whole team. Had to stay patient. My goal was always trying to get back to No.1, so this is a good start in the right direction.”

But despite nearly withdrawing from the tournament due to his back after an opening 1-over 73, Day received the attention he needed and went on to average 321 yards off the tee for the week with his new TaylorMade M3 driver featuring Twist Face technology (10.5 degrees turned down to 9).

The victory marks a fantastic start for TaylorMade's new M drivers with a fourth global win in four weeks following victories from Day, as well as Dustin Johnson (Tournament of Champions), Jon Rahm (CareerBuilder) and Tommy Fleetwood (Abu Dhabi).

According to our recent chat with TaylorMade's Brian Bazzel, Day loves Twist Face Technology in the M3 because it minimises the diving hooks he occasionally misses with on high-toe strikes.

Day was also pinpoint with his irons, utilising the TaylorMade P750 irons, which he put into play several weeks ago in Hawaii, while he continues to adopt a 48°/52°/60° wedge combination in TaylorMade's popular Milled Grind wedges.

On the greens, where Day holed a number of clutch 10-foot putts on the final day, the Australian rolled home 21 birdies for the week with his Spider Tour Red.

Day has praised the performance of the TP5x golf ball since he first put it into play at the Tournament of Champions in Kapalua last year and it is stamped with his tradional kangaroo and #87.
