Francesco Molinari named World Sport Star of the Year
Molinari wins World Sport Star at the Sports Personality of the Year 2018 awards.
The new year might be approaching, but Frankie Molinari certainly won't be forgetting 2018 any time soon.
In a year that saw Molinari conquer the Open Championship and the PGA Championship, win the Race to Dubai, become a Ryder Cup hero and be crowned European Tour Golfer of the Year, last night the Italian was voted the World Sport Star of the Year award at the prestigious BBC Sport Personality awards.
Molinari beat three other shortlisted nominees in the online public vote: Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk, snowboarder Ester Ledecka, and U.S gymnast Simone Biles.
The last golfer to win the World Sport Star of the Year award was Tiger Woods back in 2000 and Molinari is the first ever Italian to win the award.
"It's unreal, to be honest," said Molinari.
"I'm super proud to be here tonight. There are so many inspirational sporting stories. It gives us more motivation for next season," he added.
