Alex Fitzpatrick just came THIS CLOSE to shooting a 59...

Alex Fitzpatrick, the younger brother of US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, retweeted some incredible footage of himself coming within inches of shooting a 59 on Friday.

It appeared Alex, Matt and a group of friends descended on the Red Course at Streamsong in Florida for some Christmas fun and Alex almost provided some spectacular festive cheer.

James Gregg, a lead reporter and commentator on the PGA Tour, filmed Alex over his eagle putt which looked to be in the region of 40 feet, maybe more. His hopes were high, but perhaps his chances were slim.

Alex hit a confident putt and as his ball travelled to the hole, the on-lookers got more and more excited. Unfortunately, his golf ball violently lipped out and he was devastated. "Ouch," Alex said on Twitter.

Matt was filming and you could hear his heartache too. It would've been a round of 13-under on this par-72 course, but Alex had to settle for 12-under. Not the worst second prize, I suppose.

According to Golf Digest, Alex's round included nine birdies, an eagle, just one bogey and a hole-in-one on the 8th hole. An incredible round which is now the course record.

For those with good memories, six-time major champion Phil Mickelson's memorable lip-out for a 59 in the first round of the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open comes to mind in this instance.

Lefty rolled a perfect 25-foot on the 9th at TPC Scottsdale towards the hole, but his golf ball somehow horseshoed around the lip at dead weight. He settled for an 11-under-60 that day.

After the year that his brother Matt has had, earning his breakthrough win in the states at Brookline in June, Alex could've finally had some bragging rights.

After watching his sibling lift the US Open trophy and overcoming Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler in an enthralling last round, Alex felt he was vindicated by turning down a large paycheque offered to him by LIV Golf.

He played seven times on the DP World Tour in 2022 and he will be hoping to show more of this low-scoring form in the new year.
