Lexi Thompson wins Aramco Team Series event in New York, first win for 3 years
Lexi Thompson held off Brooke Henderson and Madelene Sagstrom to win by three shots at Trump Golf Links Ferry Point.
Lexi Thompson broke a three-year win drought by sealing victory in the Aramco Team Series event at Trump Golf Links Ferry Point in New York.
Thompson shot a final-round 69 on Saturday to complete a three-shot victory over Canada's Brooke Henderson and Swede Madelene Sagstrom.
It was the American's first win since picking up the ShopRite LPGA Classic title in 2019. She began the final round two shots clear at the top of the leaderboard and made four birdies on the back nine to reach 11-under.
Henderson, making her Aramco Team Series debut, charged later on the back nine with a number of birdies, but could only manage joint second with Madelene Sagstrom on 8-under.
Nelly Korda was hopeful of landing back-to-back Aramco Team Series titles, but she made three bogeys on the front nine which put an end to her challenge. She carded a 72 to finish in fourth place.
"I came into today just the way I played yesterday, just playing aggressive golf, and being kind of fiery," Thompson said.
"I hit a great shot on No. 1 to like six, seven feet and made it and I wanted to play fearless golf and not play away from pins by any means and commit to my shots. I hit some really good ones and I hit some iffy ones but with this wind and everything, you have to take the bad ones as best you can.
"I've been working extremely hard on my game. I felt like it was a matter of time but just wanted to play golf and put myself in contention in the final rounds and learn from the losses that I had and what I needed to work on which I brought into today."
The Aramco Team Series reaches its 2022 climax next month for the final event of the year in Jeddah at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, where Brooks Koepka won the Jeddah Invitational on the LIV Golf Tour.
