But recently there has been a shift. The Hyperflex shoe, the FreeStyle – these were two playful products, which many would not have known were FootJoy babies if the “FJ” logo was not emblazoned on the side.
And then the DryJoys Casual shoe. FootJoy offered a spikeless shoe, a more athletic trainer – and it was hugely popular.
By merging their expertise in making high performing golf shoes and current styles, FootJoy landed a cash cow.
In the Pro/SL, FootJoy takes the best features of the predecessor, and improves performance for golfers in 2017.
Simply a stunning shoe. It will appeal to everyone from juniors through older players.
Going “full trainer” would not have suited the FootJoy brand - rather the Pro/SL is a classy in-between that is smart enough for even the snootiest of clubs.
The block colours ooze style, while black may be the best option for those hoping to wear then into the latter/earliest months of the season.
The FootJoy Pro/SL provides supreme comfort, and impressively blends this with excellent support.
The ankle and rear area of the foot is more secure than previous models thanks to a higher tensile strength leather upper, and an X-shaped leather panel by each ankle.
Feeling locked into a golf shoe is vital, considering all the twisting and turning done in one. This is an area of sacrifice when players opt for a spikeless shoe, but FootJoy has successfully kept this drop-off to a minimum.
Comfort is maxed out, thanks to three layers of Fine-Tuned Foam (FTF) working in harmony, which the brand says aids cushioning. Whether this is the reason the shoes feel like slipping your feet into a pair of old slippers or not, we couldn’t care less. Something’s definitely working.
The leather is ChromoSkin, and is 100% waterproof, which is an added bonus. We tested the shoes in light rain and walked away with dry feet – something you can’t say for all spikeless shoes.
Regarding traction, the Pro/SL gets top marks again. A central line of spikes work in cohorts with perimeter cleats that spread their way across the underside of the shoe.
Outstanding on firm ground, and also performs admirably when mildy damp underfoot.
Available with laces or a BOA closing system (extra £15).
A major success for FootJoy. The Pro/SL improves on the hugely popular FootJoy DryJoys Casual shoe, offering increased comfort and traction, and perhaps most pertinently the foot is more secure in the shoe.
FootJoy have proved themselves masters of the spiked shoe, and are now encroaching on a new market.
This spikeless offering maintains the classy aesthetic associated with FootJoy down the years, while mixing in a more casual feel. It’s the suit and trainers look.
A stunner from FootJoy that is already proving wildly popular on Tour.
