If you are looking to shoot lower scores this season then one of the best things you can do is improve your putting stroke.

After all, one of golf's most famous quotes is 'drive for show and putt for dough'.

Putters are of course very much personal preference.

What looks nice to me might not look quite as nice to you.

But once you have figured out what sort of putter style you wish to play with, the next best thing you can do is to work on your stroke.

If you are in the market for a new putter, be sure to check out the best golf putters for the season ahead.

We have also listed all the things you need to know about putters in our latest guide.

Once you have picked out your favourite style of putter (blade, mallet, zero torque etc), the next best thing you can do is drop by your local American Golf store and book yourself in for a free putter fitting.

It really will work wonders for you, just as we found out for ourselves recently at American Golf's friendly and helpful Camberley store.

During a putter fitting at American Golf, the fitter will measure your body, analyse your putting stroke and recommend putters that suit your needs.

One of the most helpful things we discovered during our latest putter fitting was that our alignment was completely off.

The fitter got us to line up to our target (the hole) and then placed a laser down in front of the putter face and fired it against a block behind the hole to see where exactly we were lined up.

We realised we were putting two balls to the right from where we initially thought we were aiming at the hole.

A quick tweak of the putter face to line us up square to the hole initially felt very weird at first, but it certainly proved our stroke was off.

After a bit more practice with a putter we felt more comfortable with and a stroke that was better aligned, our putting improved dramatically.

The fitter also gave us a cool putting drill to work on, something we wouldn't normally have thought of doing ourselves.

He held a tee peg above the putter to prevent us hitting the tee and squaring up the putter towards our target.

Tiger Woods uses something very similar when he practices his putting and it's called the gate drill where he delivers his putter back and through a gate without hitting the two tee pegs during the stroke.

Another nice adjustment the fitter made for us was getting us to sync up our new putter with a new golf ball with alignment on it.

Some golfers like a lot of alignment, while others do not.

Again, that is where personal preference comes into your putting.

But we loved the adjustment the fitter recommended as we got to work with a TaylorMade Spider Ghost and a TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe golf ball.

The single alignment line on the front of the Spider Ghost against the neon yellow Tour Response Stripe was helping us improve our alignment, especially after the fitter had straightened us up with his laser gun.
