1. Highgate Golf Club

Highgate claims to be the closest 18-hole course to central London, situated just north of Hampstead Heath. With just one par-5, the 6015-yard course is relatively short but easily accessible.

2. Sudbury Golf Club

Just a couple of miles from Wembley Stadium and a few minutes walk from the nearest tube station, Sudbury is both reasonably central and affordable. The course measures 6277 yards and it's cheap and cheerful.

3. St George's Hill Golf Club

Situated just inside the M25, this course is a bit further out than others, but you will be rewarded for going the extra distance. Regularly voted one of the best 25 courses in the country, St George's Hill is an undulating heathland course set on an Iron Age hill-fort site.

4. Coombe Hill Golf Club

Winston Churchill was an early member of this club, which is conveniently located just south of Richmond Park. Set amongst stunning scenery, it plays 6401 yards off the back tees and describes itself as "a punishing course for the loose player and the man off his game".

5. Hadley Wood Golf Club

Designed by Alister MacKenzie ten years before the famed course architect designed Augusta, home of the US Masters, Hadley Wood shares many similar characteristics with the Georgian course, and is sure to provide a stern test.

6. Roehampton

7. Dulwich and Sydenham Hill Golf Club

8. Silvermere

Silvermere is located next to St George's Hill, just inside the M25 off the A3. Built around the Silvermere Lake, there is water on every hole from 13 onwards. Once finished, you can have a drink at the Inn on the Lake and watch others attempt to hit the island green on the 18th.

9. Romford Golf Club
