US Open final round: LIVE leaderboard, updates from Pinehurst No.2

Welcome to live golf scores, updates and commentary from the fourth and final round of the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

Bryson DeChambeau claims a second US Open title with a stunning up and down on the 18th hole to beat Rory McIlroy by one shot.

The dramatic finish at Pinehurst No.2 saw DeChambeau needing a par coming down the final hole to secure victory.

Having hit a wayward tee shot, the LIV Golf star was forced to punch out from the left rough, with his ball finding its way into a greenside bunker.

From there, DeChambeau was faced with a difficult 50-yard bunker shot, which he expertly navigated to about five feet.

With a short putt standing between him and a second US Open title, DeChambeau confidently stroked his par putt home, and victory was his.

While DeChambeau's victory was well deserved, it will be a day to forget for Rory Mcilroy, who had victory snatched away from him by two short missed putts.

Heartbreak for McIlroy

McIlroy came into the final round three shots back from DeChambeau, but some superb shot-making saw him chase down the American and overtake him on the back nine.

Unfortunately, McIlroy's putter went cold down the closing stretch, and three bogeys in his last four holes condemned him to another heartbreaking major finish.

Two missed short putts will leave plenty of scar tissue for the Northern Irishman as his search for a fifth major goes on.

Matsuyama getting dialled on the practice green

Donning his classic final day bright yellow shirt, Hideki Matsuyama is applying the finishing touches to his practice routine on the putting green.

The Japanese superstar is teeing it up alongside European starlet Ludvig Aberg today, who will be hoping he can jump back into the lead where he sat for the majority of yesterday's round.

Aberg's triple bogey on the 13th yesterday goes to show anything can happen at Pinehurst No.2, and no lead is safe until the ball is in the bottom of the cup on 18.

Here comes Bryson

Our 54-hole leader has arrived.

And my word he looks relaxed.

The 54-hole leader gets out of his courtesy car and fist bumps a few USGA officials.

He smiles broadly at the cameras following his every move...

Former Pinehurst champ Martin Kaymer offers verdict

For those that have been living under a bridge this week, Martin Kaymer triumphed at Pinehurst 10 years ago.

At one point, Kaymer was right in the thick of the action this week.

But he has struggled since making the cut.

He finishes with a total score of 13-over par.

Kaymer tells Sky Sports: "The intensity is different to normal PGA Tour events.

"It's very, very difficult. It's about not making big mistakes. And the pin position on 18 – there will not be many birdies there."

17:28
Are Jordan Spieth's best days behind him?

Spieth +9 (11)

Admittedly, Spieth is battling a wrist injury.

But he has missed five cuts this year.

One of those came at the 2024 Masters.

It really does seem like an awfully long time ago that he got his hands on the claret jug at the 2017 Open.

17:22
Brooks Koepka looks thrilled to be out there

Koepka +6 (8)

The five-time major champ is level par after eight holes.

It's a shame he's not in the mix here.

There have just been too many big numbers recorded this week from Brooksy.

17:17
Cameron Smith chugging along nicely

Cameron Smith +2 (5)

The Aussie grabs his second birdie of the day at the fifth.

He's got a clean card so far today.

We'd recommend following his X.

A note from the USGA:
Round 4 set-up information

Putting green speed – Putting green speeds ranged from the mid 13s to 14 feet on the Stimpmeter and will settle to the low to mid 13s as the day goes on.

We double cut all greens this morning but nothing was rolled.

Water management – Water was applied as needed to maintain turf health and to manage firmness.

Today's yardage

  • Front 9           3,736
  • Back 9            3,801

We are rooting for carnage

There's no doubt about it that we want to be entertained this afternoon.

Some greens are visibly baked and these pins are only accessible with extreme precision.

That being said, you have to assume that a final round of 70 will be good enough for Bryson DeChambeau today.

Only a couple of rounds have been recorded in the 60s so far today.

Matthew Fitzpatrick and SH Kim both carded 68s.

16:55
Tommy Fleetwood tees off

England's Tommy Fleetwood gets his final round underway with the American J.T. Poston.

At five-over, the Englishman is well out of it.

Still, it's another solid display from Fleetwood at a major.

Will he contend at next month's Open?

16:50
How will Rory McIlroy deal with Patrick Cantlay?

The inevitable jokes and memes arrived when it was confirmed McIlroy will be playing the final round of a major - in contention to win - with his Ryder Cup nemesis Patrick Cantlay.

In truth, McIlroy and Cantlay's caddie, Joe LaCava, will laugh at what happened by this point.

The bigger problem for McIlroy is how he will deal with pace of play.

We know it's going to be slow, given how tough this course is.

But Cantlay is also known as one of the slowest players on Tour.

He denies such accusations, but still...

There could be fireworks.

Checking in with Fitzy

Matthew Fitzpatrick's 2024 US Open has come to an end.

The Brit was touted as a possible contender this week, given how much he enjoys playing difficult courses.

After 72 holes, he finishes on 13-over.

That's good for T-64 at the minute...

It certainly isn't what we expected from the 2022 champ.

It's absolutely roasting

Playing under pressure isn't the only thing the leaders are going to have to deal with today.

Temperatures are approaching 90 degrees here.

I'm hot.

Might be too hot.

And as I type these words, Patrick Cantlay has just been spotted arriving...

16:33
There's a four or five-under out there today

Former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has told Sky Sports' broadcast he reckons there's a low one out there today.

A 66 or 65 could be on the cards, he says.

On that basis, you wouldn't rule out the likes of Ludvig Aberg or Tyrrell Hatton to fly under the radar and post a score to make the leaders sweat...

16:30
Everyone loves a stinger...

Rory McIlroy turned heads with a low bullet earlier in the week.

He described the shot as a fairway finder, which is absolutely hilarious given the skill needed to pull of this type of shot.

Si Woo Kim has gone one better than McIlroy, though...

16:29
What's happened to Scottie Scheffler?

It seems remarkable to say that for the first time in two years we are going into the final round of a huge event without the world number one in contention.

Scheffler is now at seven-over for the championship in a tie for 45th.

He's already over par today though four holes, courtesy of a bogey at the second.

16:23
Checking in with the reigning champ

Wyndham Clark +5, Cameron Smith +5 (1)

Clark gets his final round underway alongside LIV's Cam Smith.

Both players record pars on their opening hole.

Clark has been excellent in the 'big' events this season, finishing second at the Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational.

But his performances in the majors this year remains somewhat of a mystery.

He missed the cut at the 2024 Masters and it was the same story at the PGA Championship.

16:15
Here's what McIlroy said after his third round

"I love the test that Pinehurst is presenting, and you've got to focus and concentrate on every single shot out there. It's what a U.S. Open should be like. It's obviously great to be in the mix.

"I think I'm embracing the questions that the golf course asks of you. I think there's holes where you have to be aggressive.

"There's holes where you have to be conservative. There's hole locations that you can take on and hit wedges close to. There's hole locations you've got to stay away from.

"It tests your chipping. It tests your putting. It obviously tests your mental fortitude more than any other golf tournament.

"As I said at the start of the week, it's a style of golf that I've started to try and embrace over these last few years, and it's the reason that my performances at the U.S. Open have been much improved over the last half a decade."

Rory McIlroy has arrived

Rors is at the property.

And he looks relaxed.

He's just had a workout, and will now head to the range.

16:06
When do the leaders tee off?

A reminder that Bryson DeChambeau will begin his final round at 2.21pm EDT / 7.21pm BST.

DeChambeau is playing with Frenchman Matthieu Pavon.
