Former Open champion Mark Calcavecchia has slammed Pinehurst No.2 as 'the most overrated course in the world' after watching the first round of the 2024 US Open.

Calcavecchia, 64, etched his name on the famous Claret Jug following a playoff victory over Australian duo Greg Norman and Wayne Grady at this year's Open venue, Royal Troon.

Pinehurst No.2 is hosting the US Open for a fourth time this week.

It hosted the tournament in 1999, won by late great Payne Stewart, in 2005, won by New Zealand's Michael Campbell, and again in 2014 when Germany's Martin Kaymer sprinted away from the field.

Calcavecchia played in the 1999 US Open at Pinehurst No.2 and he missed the cut.

After watching the first-round action play out at the 2024 US Open on Thursday, the 13-time PGA Tour winner unloaded criticism of the North Carolina course.

The American admitted he was 'ready for some abuse' before slamming the Pinehurst No.2 as the 'most overrated course in the world'.

It's fair to say the tweet divided opinion on X / Twitter heading into the second round of the US Open.

Calcavecchia tweeted:

"I’m ready for some abuse. Just gonna spit it out!! Pinehurst is such a cool area with great courses. #2 ain’t one of them. Most overrated course in the world!! Lemme have it!! But it’s true."

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay moved into a share of the lead after rounds of 5-under 65 on day one of the US Open.

Scottie Scheffler got off to a slow start and has plenty of work to do to get back in the mix after opening with a 1-over 71.
