Charlie Woods takes big step towards competing at 2025 US Open

Charlie Woods, Tiger Woods' 15-year-old son, qualified for his first-ever USGA tournament on Wednesday after leading his qualifying event with a score of one-under. 

The win means Woods will compete at the US Junior Amateur next month at Oakland Hills.

The winner of the US Junior Amateur will also secure a spot at the 2025 US Open, set to take place at Oakmont Country Club.

Woods bested a field of 75 players at Eagle Trace Golf Club, shooting a one-under 71.

His round got off to a rocky start with bogeys coming on the third and 10th holes, but thankfully a string of three birdies in four holes on the back nine steadied the ship and were enough to secure the win. 

Speaking to reporters after the round, Woods said:

“I didn’t play great my first two holes, but I played really good for the last 16. I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and I took advantage of some nice birdie looks when I had them.”

Woods, who was seen at Pinehurst No.2 for the US Open helping his father get tuned up on the range, will now have to face off against a 264-player field at Oakland Hills.

The US Junior Amateur Championship consists of two rounds of stroke play, with the top 64 players moving forward to a match play stage, with the eventual champions earning a spot at the 2025 US Open. 

The Woods family know a thing or two about USGA events, with Tiger having won three straight US Junior Amateurs, three straight US Amateurs and three US Open titles.

His fathe was just 14 years old when he first qualified for the US Junior Amateur Championship and advanced to the semi-final on his first attempt. 

A year later, he went on to win the tournament at Bay Hill and is still the only player to win the tournament in three consecutive years.
