Tiger Woods opened up about the devastating loss of his mother after being involved in a hilarious misunderstanding during his TGL match.

Woods left his Jupiter Links teammates Kevin Kisner and Tom Kim in fits of laughter at the SoFi Center on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old's team were trailing 9-3 to New York when he left himself 199 yards to the pin after hitting his tee shot on the 13th hole.

Woods thought he heard his caddie say '99 yards' so reached for his 56 degree wedge and hit his golf ball 100 yards up the fairway.

Kisner and Kim lost it.

"One of the most embarrassing moments in my golfing career just happened," the hot mics picked up Woods saying. "I screwed up. That was embarrassing."

Woods' Jupiter Links were comfortably beaten 10-3 in their contest against New York's Matthew Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young and Rickie Fowler.

His team are now bottom of the TGL standings.

Speaking to reporters later in the evening, Woods opened up about the recent death of his mother Kultida.

Kultida watched her son play for the last time at the same arena on 27 January.

Woods confirmed her death on 4 February and subsequently withdrew from the Genesis Invitational on the PGA Tour

"I had a hard time driving down here," Woods said.

"I hadn't hit a golf ball since I played with the president and just put everything away and shut it off.

"I had a really hard time getting here and then reliving all the moments that we've had, my mom, how excited she was to have Charlie drive her her.

"So some of those moments are great memories. It's been a hard process."

Added Kisner: "I've met Ms. Woods a few times obviously at majors and other big golf tournaments that I played in with Tiger and seeing her there.

"[I] probably spent the most time with her here at TGL actually the first two weeks, and she made sure to let me know how poorly I played in the first match and then was so excited in the second match that we won and turned it around.

"She was so competitive and loved watching us win, and I think that's a great memory for me.

"Obviously I've known Tiger a long time and always there to support him and always will be."
