Ryder Cup rejection still hits Adrian Meronk hard: "I knew what I could've done"
Adrian Meronk has opened up on the disappointment of not being picked for the 2023 Ryder Cup, explaining he was 'glad' when it was all over.
Adrian Meronk has revealed he was glad when the Ryder Cup was over so he could move on from the disappointment of not being picked.
The giant Polish golfer was widely expected to be part of Luke Donald's side given his success on the course over the last 12 months.
Aside from winning the ISPS Handa Australian Open and the Estrella Damn N.A. Andalucia Masters, he even picked up a victory at the venue of the 2023 dust-up.
Meronk won the Italian Open in May at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, finishing six strokes ahead of Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard who ended up being one of Donald's captain's picks.
In the immediate aftermath of being told he wasn't going to be picked, Meronk previously explained he was shocked and angry.
Meronk was actually on the train with his girlfriend Melania Bobrowicz when Donald made the call.
He wished the team well, but of course, the rejection will live long in his memory.
Opening up on his disappointment, Meronk told The Times: "I was home in Poland and I watched a bit in the morning and then went to practice.
"There was nothing I could do and I wanted to get better. I watched the Sunday singles and it was great to see how Europe performed. It was actually quite an exciting Ryder Cup."
He added: "Watching on a course like that, where I've had success, was not easy, but no, I don't wish bad on anybody.
"It wasn't up to me who was playing. It didn't matter what I thought or wished. I had good memories and knew what I could have done, but I accepted it.
"It was tough for me, though, and I was glad when it finished. People were not talking about the Ryder Cup much any more and I could move on."
Donald's European team, spearheaded by Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland, defeated Zach Johnson's Team USA by five points.
