Jim Furyk admits he will soon reach out to Tiger Woods to give him the option of playing a role on his United States Presidents Cup team next month.

Furyk, 54, has been handed the reigns on a first US Presidents Cup captaincy as the stars and stripes look to defend their title against Mike Weir's International side at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada from 26-29 September.

The captaincy for Furyk comes six years after he skippered the US Ryder Cup team to a disappointing 17.5-10.5 loss at the hands of Thomas Bjorn's European side.

Woods, 48, has played a key role in team strategy across a number of recent US Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams.

Although Woods recently turned down the opportunity to captain the 2025 US Ryder Cup team as a result of having too much on his plate with all things PGA Tour / PIF and TGL, Furyk has left the door open for the 15-time major champion to once again have involvement at the Presidents Cup.

When pressed for comment by Golfweek as to whether Woods would have a role in his team, Furyk said a phone call is on the cards.

Furyk told Golfweek

"I’ll reach out to Tiger. I think we all kind of expected that he was going to be named Ryder Cup captain and when that didn’t happen, I know he’s got his plate full with the PGA Tour and working on our board, which seems to be a lot of work at the moment.

"So I’ll reach out, say hello. You know, I know he’s got some great strategy. He’s got some great stuff with pairings, but as of yet I haven’t reached out."

Furyk currently has four assistant captains in Stewart Cink, Justin Leonard, Kevin Kisner and Keegan Bradley.

He is allowed one more, and he will be announcing that soon.

Could it be Woods?

Furyk said:

"I still have one more to name and I have a pretty good idea who’ll that be."

Six US players are already on the plane to Canada, and six more will be confirmed when Furyk announces his captain's picks this Sunday.

When Furyk was pressed by Golfweek on whether Bradley will receive one of his six captain's picks - despite already being an assistant - having recently won the BMW Championship, he confirmed he has a plan but can't say much more than that until Sunday.

Furyk said of Bradley:

"That’s a road we’ll cross when I get there.

"We’ll wait and see who the picks are.

"Let’s not put the cart before the horse.

"I’ve got a plan of what I want to do, I just don’t want to talk about it that in-depth, how’s that?"

The United States are looking to win the Presidents Cup for a 10th consecutive year.

Should USA win again, it will mark a 13th time they have lifted the trophy since the Presidents Cup was founded in 1994.

The Internationals won in 1998 and they also tied the match in 2003.
