Tour pro reveals one 'small asterisk' he would put on Scottie Scheffler's career
English tour pro Eddie Pepperell has revealed the one small asterisk he would put on Scottie Scheffler's career.
English tour pro Eddie Pepperell has revealed the one 'small asterisk' he would put on Scottie Scheffler's career so far.
The American World No.1 landed his 16th PGA Tour title at last week's Memorial Tournament and will head into the U.S. Open next week as the heavy favourite.
Should the 28-year-old American clinch his fourth major win at Oakmont he would tick off the third leg of the career grand slam and set up a remarkable opportunity to make history at next month's Open at Royal Portrush.
There is absolutely no doubt we are witnessing greatness and many golf pundits, former players and fans have already lodged their predictions as to just how many wins Scheffler will rack up before he retires.
Nicklaus - who took three years and one month to reach 16 PGA Tour wins - claimed Scheffler is already playing more consistently and better than he ever did.
Pepperell told the latest episode of The Chipping Forecast if Scheffler can stay healthy and have a career that lasts at least 25 years then it is very conceivable he could win 50 PGA Tour events.
"Which would put him in that echelon [of great players," Pepperell said.
"The only asterisk that I would put next to Scheffler at the moment, and it's a small one, it's the LIV stuff.
"You know, I was watching him yesterday going up against Ben Griffin - Ben Griffin is obviously on good form, but if that had been Jon Rahm, or Bryson, or Dustin Johnson when he was in his pomp or Brooks Koepka, I just think he would have been pushed more.
"I think Scheffler would have been pushed more over these last two or three years than he has been because of the whole players not being there because they are on LIV.
"And that may have resulted in fewer wins or victories. Now, I will say, given his major record he still is ahead of everybody.
"But I really wish he had been going up against Jon Rahm more regularly because, to me, it's the Jon Rahms of this world that are going to test Scottie Scheffler and really show us - where we compare Tiger to Phil - we can't really keep necessarily doing that at the moment."
Rahm, Johnson, DeChambeau and Koepka are back in action this week with LIV Golf.
The breakaway tour are in Virginia for stop eight of their 2025 schedule.
Scheffler has decided to take a week off before heading to Oakmont.
What did Jack Nicklaus say?
The Golden Bear paid Scheffler the ultimate compliment after he went back-to-back at Muirfield Village.
Nicklaus said Scheffler was already playing better and more consistently than he ever did.
He claimed the chasing pack last Sunday aren't in Scheffler's league and the golfer knows it.
"He doesn't want to tell you," Nicklaus said. He doesn't want to brag about what he does. But he has the ability to bring his level to whatever level it needs to be. That's what good players do.
"And, you know, he's not a good player, he's a great player. I mean, look at the record that he has had the last few years. It's unbelievable."
