PGA Tour pro Seamus Power walks out after nine holes during first round at RBC Canadian Open
Ireland's Seamus Power was forced to withdraw after just nine holes in the first round of the RBC Canadian Open due to a recurring back injury.
PGA Tour pro Seamus Power withdrew after just nine holes during the first round of the RBC Canadian Open at TPC Toronto.
After making eight straight pars, Power, 38, bogeyed the 9th and then shook hands with his playing partners Peter Malnati and Rafael Campos.
Power had found three of seven fairways and six of nine greens in regulation.
The reason for Power's WD has not officially been disclosed by the PGA Tour.
But his local golf club in Waterford, Ireland, has heard back pain was once again the reason for his latest WD.
"Initial information is that it is due to a back injury," tweeted West Waterford Golf Club.
"Unfortunately this continues a series of issues for Séamus, including previous back and hip problems."
Power has now withdrawn from three tournaments within the last seven months as a result of injury on the PGA Tour.
The Irishman has been plagued by both back and hip injuries since 2023.
The two-time PGA Tour winner first sustained a hip injury two years ago and that ultimately cost him his place on a first European Ryder Cup team at Marco Simone.
Power then sustained a back injury at the end of last season and that caused him to withdraw during the second round of the RSM Classic at the end of November.
Then earlier this year in January he had to withdraw from The American Express after back trouble flared up again when missing the cut at the Sony Open.
Power has chalked up just one top-10 finish in 15 PGA Tour events in 2025.
That came with a T8 at the Valspar Championship in March.
In seven of 14 events prior to this week he had missed the cut.
Once ranked 28th in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Power looks on from the 129th rung of the ladder.
Power is not eligible to compete in next week's U.S. Open.
He would have needed to win this week's RBC Canadian Open in order to qualify for golf's third major of the season at Oakmont.
The Irishman also failed to qualify for The Masters in April but he did play iin the PGA Championship last month only to miss the cut with rounds of 72 and 74.
Power won his first PGA Tour title at the Barbasol Championship in July 2021.
He then captured his second victory at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in October 2022.
