Scottie Scheffler missed a short five-foot birdie putt on the 18th to hand Stephan Jaeger his maiden title on the PGA Tour at the Texas Children's Houston Open.

Scheffler was bidding to become the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win three straight tournaments on the PGA Tour.

The World No.1 was also looking to win his first title in his home state of Texas.

But it was not to be as Scheffler failed to convert his short five-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th as Jaeger watched on to collect his first title in 135 starts on the PGA Tour.

Jaeger, 34, previously won six times on the Korn Ferry Tour.

The victory sees Jaeger now play his way into The Masters for the first time in his career from 11-14 April.

Jaeger has decided to WD from next week's Texas Open where Rory McIlroy will start a warm tournament favourite.

Jaeger carded a final-round 67 to finish the week on 12-under par.

The German prevailed by one stroke over Scheffler, Alejandro Tosti, Thomas Detry, Taylor Moore and defending champion Tony Finau.

Argentina's Tosti bogeyed the final hole to fall out of the lead, while Belgium's Detry burned the edge for eagle on 16 and again for birdie on 17.

England's David Skinns was also in the mix for much of the final round but he bogeyed the 18th to fall into a tie for seventh on 10-under par alongside compatriot Aaron Rai, Max Greyserman and Billy Horschel.
