Rory McIlroy has admitted regret at getting so involved in the PGA Tour's fight with LIV Golf

But that hasn't stopped the Ulsterman making a few remarks that could be perceived as somewhat pointed.

The 35-year-old kept up his spell of good form at the RBC Canadian Open, ultimately finishing in a tie for fourth as an agitated and tearful Robert MacIntyre claimed his maiden title.

It was abundantly clear just how much the natives enjoyed watching their home open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

Over the last two years the RBC Canadian Open has been somewhat overshadowed.

In 2022, it was played during the same week of LIV's inaugural event just outside of London, which prompted the PGA Tour to ban 17 players.

McIlroy, famously, chided LIV commissioner Greg Norman in the aftermath of victory after he surpassed the Australian's record of 20 PGA Tour titles.

A year later, it was played in the same week the PGA Tour announced a framework agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

As far as McIlroy is now concerned, national opens are showing the PGA Tour what money can't buy.

"I think history and tradition and legacy are a really big part of the game of golf," he told reporters on Sunday evening.

McIlroy said the national opens mean 'something else', adding: "It's great that so many people, Golf Canada, RBC have gotten behind this RBC Canadian Open and made it really special.

"As I said, it's a pleasure to come up here and play every year and I'm going to keep doing that until they tell me I can't come over the border."

McIlroy is right to say RBC have gotten behind the event.

RBC has been the title sponsor since 2008.

But according to Golf Channel, RBC will take a wait-and-see approach over renewing its sponsorship.

Per the report, RBC want to clarification over the Tour's PIF deal.

McIlroy will now turn his attentions to the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

The full field has now been revealed and Tiger Woods is the notable absentee, despite previous speculation he would be involved.

After that, McIlroy attempt to win his fifth major at the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2.
