Report: PGA Tour players to vote on shock changes

The PGA Tour's players advisory council are reportedly exploring some options that would reshape the North American circuit as we know it.

The PGA Tour's players advisory council are reportedly exploring some seismic changes.

According to Golfweek, PAC members met this week prior to the BMW Championship to discuss some alterations that could potentially arrive for the 2026-2027 season.

The primary area of discussion was reducing field sizes for regular Tour events.

Currently, sizes of fields are between 144 and 156 players.

According to the report

"It has become a growing concern that field sizes of 144 and 156 are causing too many occurrences of failing to make a cut on Friday due to not enough daylight."

If the change is implemented then it would also bring up another conversation about how many members would be able to retain their Tour cards.

At the moment, the top 125 players in the FedExCup standings retain their cards.

The reduction in field sizes could potentially mean this number is reduced to 100.

A source told the publication: "You have to get it done for 2026 – 2025 is baked in – but it has to be set in motion so guys know what they are playing for (next season)."

UPDATE:

A player, who was given anonymity, later told the publication that a vote wasn't held but an 'informal discussion' was had.

"[It was a] positive call and very collaborative between players and leadership," the golfer said.
