Hideki Matsuyama: what's in the bag of the Genesis Invitational winner?
Hideki Matsuyama WITB 2024: Srixon staff player enters the record books at Riviera.
Srixon staff player Hideki Matsuyama was victorious at the Genesis Invitational, setting the Riviera record for the lowest round by the winner.
Matsuyama, 31, claimed his ninth PGA Tour title as he set the record for the most PGA Tour wins by an Asian-born player.
The former Masters champion overcame a six-shot deficit, shooting a 9-under par 62, to post a score of 17-under par.
That was enough to seal a three-stroke victory over Will Zalatoris and Luke List.
Matsuyama hit two amazing shots back-to-back on the 15th and 16th leaving tap-in birdies from eight inches and six inches respectively.
His final round ranked first in putting inside of 10 feet (making 15 out of 15) and he was both first in strokes gained tee-to-green (+6.024) and around-the-green (+3.398).
Matsuyama's astonishing final round was also first for par 5 performance (-3), par four performance (-5), scrambling (4/4), and total birdies (9).
Tiger Woods was the tournament host but he was not in attendance to present the trophy to Matsuyama.
Woods was forced to withdraw from his event during the second round due to illness.
"Little disappointed I wasn't able to take a picture with Tiger today," Matsuyama said in his victory speech.
It was Matsuyama’s first win on the PGA Tour since his playoff win at the Sony Open two years ago.
Matsuyama is a Srixon staffer but uses a TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood, a Cobra King RadSpeed Tour 5-wood, and a Scotty Cameron Prototype putter.
He continues to use Iomic X grips, which are on the heavier side to help stabilise his unique tempo.
