Fred Couples taken aback by reporter before PNC Championship: "What a question"
Fred Couples was asked whether the PGA Tour needs better entertainers ahead of the parent/child PNC Championship in Florida.
Fred Couples was taken a tad by surprise with a reporter's question ahead of the PNC Championship.
The former Masters champion is making his debut in the hit-and-giggle PGA Tour event this week with his stepson Hunter.
Couples has made it clear over the past few years he couldn't care less about the rival LIV Golf League.
He's only concerned with the future of the North American circuit.
That being said, what does the future look like for men's professional golf?
We are certainly approaching a new era.
Are there enough entertainers in the sport?
Couples reckons 'our guys need to show a little more'.
He watched this week's Showdown featuring Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy against LIV recruits Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
Couples thought it was 'fun' but was confused as to why the golfers would subject themselves to playing in the pitch black and in the freezing cold.
"It was just weird," he said.
A reporter asked Couples: "I don't know how much you pay attention week-to-week of the PGA Tour, but do you have any advice for these guys on how to be better entertainers, or do you think they are already?"
"What a question," Couples said.
"You know, sometimes I sit and think about that and what did I do.
"I get mad -- but, I mean, when you play well, you've got to give the people more than they expect.
"And when you play poorly, that's when it becomes you don't want to do anything stupid."
He continued: "Golf is a game of happy things.
"When Rory missed that putt at the U.S. Open and lost, you know, I don't know what anyone would have done.
"He got in his car and he left. You can pick on anything that he wanted to do.
"But we have to get people to love the golf again.
"Everyone loves to play golf, but I think it's got nothing to do with -- I laugh when they say LIV this and the Tour that.
"Our Tour is really what I'm worried about, and I don't even watch their Tour. So I don't know if they're laughing and giggling all the time.
"But our guys need to show a little more."
