European Ryder Cup star forced out of BMW Championship during third round
Scotland's Bob MacIntyre was forced to WD from the second FedEx Cup Playoffs event on the PGA Tour.
Bob MacIntyre was forced to withdraw due to a back injury during the third round of the BMW Championship at Castle Pines GC.
MacIntyre, 28, was 2-over par thru nine holes and 1-over par for the tournament before he decided to call time on the PGA Tour's second FedEx Cup Playoffs event in Colorado.
According to MacIntyre's management team, the Scot felt a niggle in his back just before he teed off on Saturday.
He tried to fight through the pain barrier but thought better of the situation as he made the turn in the third round, especially in light of next week's 30-man FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship at East Lake.
MacIntyre is safely through to the Tour Championship no matter what happens on the leaderboard on Sunday.
"Sadly, we have to announce that Robert MacIntyre has withdrawn from the BMW Championship with a niggling back injury incurred in the last five minutes before his tee time in Round 3," confirmed Bounce Sports Management who represents MacIntyre.
"He will now receive treatment in the hope of making [the] Tour Championship."
MacIntyre's WD comes 24 hours after Hideki Matsuyama also pulled out of the BMW Championship due to a back injury.
Matsuyama is also safe for next week.
FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler has also been nursing a back injury this week, but he is still competing in the tournament.
Scheffler is enduring a rare poor week.
MacIntyre has won twice on the PGA Tour in 2024.
His first PGA Tour title came at the Canadian Open where he had his father Dougie on the bag.
MacIntyre then won the Scottish Open on home soil.
Last year, MacIntyre made his debut in the European Ryder Cup team.
He performed admirably in Rome taking 2.5 points from a possible three.
A host of players are in contention to win the BMW Championship on Sunday, including US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, Ludvig Aberg and Alex Noren.
Xander Schauffele, who is currently second in the FedEx Cup standings, is also in the hunt for the tournament, as too is local favourite Wyndham Clark.
Schauffele needs to win the BMW Championship in order to start next week's Tour Championship with the lead.
