Former Masters champion Adam Scott claimed he's been an 'atrocious' iron player for nearly two years after he opened up a three-shot lead at the halfway stage of the BMW Championship

Scott carded a blistering 9-under 63 on Friday at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado.

The 44-year-old is searching for his first PGA Tour win in four years.

He told reporters that he's changed his clubs again and is now gaming a set of Miura KM-700 irons.

"I don't ever putt bad, actually," Scott said.

He added: "It's really my iron play has been atrocious for two years, and that's why I've been moving stuff around, because I figured if I leave it the same, I'll keep getting atrocious.

"But before the Scottish, we managed to really, like, sort my irons out, in what I'm using to shaft to grip to lofts to lie angles and club, the whole thing, complete working over, and as soon as we did that, it started feeling better."

Scott was referring to his near miss at the Scottish Open in July where he finished runner-up to Robert MacIntyre.

The Australian was bogey-free here on Friday.

He made birdies at 1, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 17.

"I can't remember the last time I shot a 63 out here," he said.

"But it feels good to go low, that I've still got that in me. Hopefully, there's one more this week."

Scott needs a minimum of a two-way tie for 20th if he wants to advance to his 13th Tour Championship.

He is eyeing up more than that, now.

Elsewhere, world number one Scottie Scheffler carded a level par 72 and is in a tie for 29th.

Scheffler lost his temper when one of his approach shots didn't spin back off an upslope.

Rory McIlroy is tied for 15th on 3-under.

The highlight of his round came when he staked his claim for one of the worst club tosses of all-time after a poor tee shot
