Patrick Reed has moved one step closer to securing his first start in The Open since 2023.

Former Masters champion Reed is among 17 LIV Golf players in the field at this week's International Series event in Macau.

The series, under the banner of the Asian Tour, rewards the order of merit winner a spot in the lucrative PIF-backed league.

And this tournament also forms part of the Open Qualifying Series.

Three players, not otherwise exempt, will earn spots into the field at Royal Portrush later this summer.

Reed has put together rounds of 63 and 64 at Macau Golf and Country Club to lead Carlos Ortiz by one stroke.

Sergio Garcia is also in the field and is currently tied for fifth, four shots behind the American.

Reed told reporters earlier in the week: "I feel like any time you have an opportunity to qualify for a major it just gives you extra motivation to go out and have a little bit more drive to go out and try make those putts and play your best game.

"Because at the end of the day, they're the four events that we're trying to always play."

Last year, Reed ended his streak of 41 consecutive major starts when he missed the U.S. Open and Open Championship.

He last played golf's oldest major at Royal Liverpool.

"It would mean a lot to get back on that run," Reed added.

Reed is currently only exempt for the 2025 Masters as he is a former champion.

Garcia had competed in 22 straight Opens until he missed the event in 2023 and 2024.

The Spaniard said: "This is an important week, obviously we all love to play in the majors and be a part of them and give ourselves a shot at it.

"So to have the opportunity of qualifying here with these three top spots is huge."
