Benross has stuck its neck out with its claim that these VX Proto irons are 'simply the best iron available for the mid-handicap golfer.'

Compared to its new  Innovator XXX stablemate, it's perhaps more suited to a better player - though not that much better - because of a slightly narrow top line and a square, less rounded sole.

I found the Proto a tad more accurate than the Innovator XXX but possibly because the steel shaft (True Temper Dynamic Lite)  has that tendency over graphite (Aldila DVS-i). The back cavity is less pronounced and the head is more compact and less offset.

An added bonus is that specialist 52 deg and 56 deg Zip-It wedges are available with the set along with a 4-iron.

Verdict

Strong claims from Benross about its 'players iron' and will certainly find favour from those with little experience of the brand. Personally I found the Innovator XXX irons more forgiving.
