Pros
Long, forgiving, soft feeling golf ball, spins a lot with the wedges, Triple Track aid is great on the greens
Cons
Triple Track aid can be off-putting when it lines up 40 yards left of the green on a second shot

The Callaway Chrome Soft ball is one of the best value-for-money premium golf balls in the game today, and its revamped model for 2020 only hammers home that message.

At £39.99 per dozen, you are saving yourself around a tenner against some other premium golf balls out there, but still getting added distance out of every club in the bag and spin where you need it most with those scoring clubs.

"We've reinvented Tour ball performance again with Chrome Soft to give golfers more of what they want – long distance, great feel, and exceptional spin control from tee-to-green." - Dr Alan Hocknell, Head of Callaway R&D

A lot of people have recently asked me about the differences between the new Chrome Soft and the new Chrome Soft X, and which one they should be using, so it's probably a good place to start when discussing the benefits of each ball. I'll be honest, I've found both Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X balls to generate minimal differences but important ones at the same time.

The Chrome Soft feels a much better ball for my overall game as a 14-handicap player, and it also proves that in terms of my numbers with three yards of additional yardage against the Chrome Soft X, and also 100 RPM more spin with full 56-degree wedge shots. I noted higher launch and higher spin with just about every iron and wedge I struck on full shots. The spin control with this ball on chip shots is outstanding, too.

The key advantage I see with the new Chrome Soft X, which feels very reactive around the greens and out of sand, is that you can work this ball a lot more with the irons and from off the tee.

The Chrome Soft tends to hold its line a little more, which is great for me as I tend to throw in a couple of squiffy hits that need some help to keep them in play. I would therefore recommend the Chrome Soft X for good ball strikers and players that want to increase their levels of workability out there, and Chrome Soft for players who want more forgiveness.

As always, however, I recommend you get custom fit for your golf balls just as you should for the rest of your bag. After all, it's one of the few pieces of equipment you use on every shot so it's important to make sure it's right for your game.

There is also a great selector tool on the Callaway website that I recommend you take a closer look at should you be interested in either of these golf balls.

KEY FEATURES OF THE NEW CHROME SOFT:

- Larger Graphene-Infused Dual SoftFast Core For Increased Distance

- Consistent Speed and Penetrating Ball Flight From a New High-Speed Mantle System

- Incredible Feel and Spin Control From a Thinner Urethane Cover

- Longer Distance and Consistent Trajectory From Optimized Aero Design

- Advanced Alignment From Triple Track Technology

One particular addition I love when it comes to the new Chrome Soft ball, and it's the most visual of them all, is its new Triple Track Technology

This new aid on the golf ball might not be for everyone out there, but it has certainly helped me start the ball on my intended target line when I'm on the greens.

Watch the video above to learn more about the science behind Triple Track. A lot of brands appear to be looking to improve the alignment on their golf balls in 2020, and the Triple Track is certainly one of the better ones in my book.

The only slight negative I have about alignment aids like this is on approach shots into the green where the lines might be lining up 40 yards left of the green but you want to obviously hit your ball down the flag. It can look a bit off-putting when that happens, but if you can block that out then you are onto a winner with the Triple Track especially on the greens.

VERDICT

Without a doubt, one of my favourite golf balls on the market and one that will typically be found in my bag.

One of the longest golf balls I've tested this year, and also the most impressive when it comes to spin control.

I like the Triple Track aid too, but that is very much a personal preference and you can choose whether to buy a sleeve with that on it or just have the normal version.

One of the best value-for-money golf balls in the game today at less than £40 per dozen.
