PGA Tour pro Dylan Frittelli takes aim after Ryan Gerard admits he doesn't like holding an umbrella because his "arms get fatigued".

PGA Tour pro Ryan Gerard hit the top of the leaderboard and then made perhaps one of the more bizarre comments you will hear from a player this season.

Gerard, 25, opened with a 5-under 65 in difficult conditions in the first round of the Texas Children's Houston Open at Memorial Park GC.

The American, who is going in search of his first PGA Tour title, finds himself in a tie for the lead after 18 holes alongside Taylor Pendrith, Keith Mitchell and Alejandro Tosti.

World No.1 and tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler opened with a flawless round of 3-under 67 to lie just two shots off the pace.

It was a tougher start for Rory McIlroy, who could only begin with a level-par 70

But back to the top of the story, and when asked by a reporter after the round what his main focus is when it's chucking down with rain on the course, Gerard revealed he's got no time whatsoever when it comes to holding an umbrella.

"So like I'm weird, I don't like holding the umbrella because I feel like my arms get fatigued and I stand over a shot and I feel like I hit it weird," said Gerard.

"So I kind of just wear the rain jacket and try and not get the grips wet.

"If I can do that and just pick quality targets and try and just make solid swings to the targets, whatever happens from there is kind of up to the skid or the rain or the water droplets or whatever it could be.

"So I just try to pick good targets and make quality swings to 'em, and pretty happy with how it went."

Gerard's comments about not wanting to hold an umbrella drew plenty of replies in the PGA Tour's Instagram thread.

Fellow PGA Tour pro Dylan Frittelli, who also plays on the DP World Tour, commented: "Do you even lift bro? It's only water at the end of the day."

One golf fan wrote: "Go lift some weights then..."

"I don’t care if that umbrella is 40 pounds you just can’t say this," commented another fan.
