McIlroy appeared stumped behind a tree at the par-4 12th, and Sky Sports on-course commentator Andrew Coltart assumed he was all set to take his medicine and chip out short of the green.

How wrong he was as the Ulsterman stepped in with a long iron and played the most miraculous fade shot, using the contours of the green to bring his TP5 ball to within four feet of the cup.

Unfortunately McIlroy wouldn't even hit the cup with his birdie attempt, but he made amends with three consecutive birdies from the 14th to move into a share of the first-round lead with American Joel Dahmen on 5-under par.

McIlroy has an incredible record at Quail Hollow having won there twice in 2010 (his first PGA Tour title) and 2015, the latter of which he posted a course-record 61.
