WATCH: Nanna Koerstz Madsen's BUNKER SHANK on 18 at AIG Women's Open

Nanna Koerstz Madsen was left to rue a costly bunker shank in the greenside bunker at Carnoustie's 18th hole as she handed the AIG Women's Open on a plate to Anna Nordqvist. 

Madsen, 26, was bidding to land her maiden major title as she strode down the final hole tied for the lead on 12-under par with Nordqvist, but her finish sadly had a touch of the Jean van de Velde's about it at the 1999 Open Championship. 

After both hitting solid tee shots down the 72nd hole, Nordqvist sent her approach shot to inside 30 feet for birdie.

Madsen could not follow suit though and found the greenside bunker, and she would then unfortunately shank her ball over the back of the green.

Madsen chipped up to eight feet, but would go on to miss the putt to record a disastrous double-bogey six, sending her from a tie for the lead into tied fifth on 10-under par. 

Her double-bogey finish at 18 cost her more than $600,000.

Nordqvist duly two-putted from 28 feet to wrap up a narrow one-shot victory and her third major title. She also scooped a whopping first prize of $870,000.
