Jason Day wins Wells Fargo: "Probably the best win of my career"

Jason Day believes winning his 12th PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship represents the "best victory of his career" simply down to not having his A-game on display in the final round at Quail Hollow.

Day, 30, led by two strokes heading into Sunday and carded a nerveless 69 to run out a two-stroke triumph over Americans Aaron Wise and Nick Watney on 12-under. 

The Australian birdied the second hole and then exchanged two bogeys at the fifth and sixth with consecutive birdies at seven and eight. A birdie at 10 extended Day's lead to three but consecutive bogeys at 13 and 14 after errant tee shots saw Day fall level with a fast-finishing Wise. 

But the former world number one responded under pressure with a clutch birdie at the lengthy par-4 16th, before he clattered his tee shot at the par-3 17th into the flagstick for a tap-in birdie. 

While the driving was errant for much of the week, it was his short game mastery and putting that saw him get over the line. Incredibly for Day, he has now not missed a putt inside of five feet on the PGA Tour in his last 176 attempts.

Day also got up-and-down 14 of 15 times from the greenside bunkers at Quail Hollow.

"I had no idea where the ball was going today, I missed so many tee shots but my short game stood the test," said Day.

"This is probably the best win of my career, simply because I didn't have my A-game out there today."

Day now heads to TPC Sawgrass where he will attempt to win The Players Championship for a second time in the last three years.

"I'm coming off a nice win and  I'm confident in my ability to win the Players, but I definitely need to focus on improving my driving going into the week," he said. 

The victory sends Day back to world number seven. 

Another impressive stat for Day is that he has now converted five of six 54-hole leads on the PGA Tour into victories. 

Bryson DeChambeau finished fourth on 8-under, while Phil Mickelson shared fifth place with Paul Casey and Peter Uihlein on 7-under. 

Rory McIlroy endured a topsy-turvy week but finished tied 16th on 3-under, while Tiger Woods closed with a 74 to finish tied 55th on 2-over par. It marked just the sixth time in Woods' PGA Tour career where he failed to make a single birdie in the round.
