Sunningdale to host Ryder Cup captains in Senior Open

Sunningdale will host the 2015 Senior Open Championship with four victorious Ryder Cup captains in the field.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer will lock horns with Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrance on the Old Course from 23-26 July.

Langer, who could become the first player to retain the title in 15 years, said: “It’s one of the all-time great courses. It’s a wonderful heathland course and it’s always in great condition. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like Sunningdale.”

Montgomerie, last year's runner-up, said: “I’ve always said it’s a gorgeous place to be, not just for playing golf but to just walk around.  It will be a great success.”

Torrance, a member at Sunningdale, is hoping experience will help him better a fifth place finish in 2009, the last time the venue hosted the Senior Open.

“I love the golf course,” said Torrance. “I’ve been there for the last 44 years, I was assistant pro there in 1971 so there’s not a blade of grass that I’m not familiar with. It’s obviously our biggest tournament of the year and the best field by a mile with all the Americans who come over and play, so it’ll be fantastic.”

American Loren Roberts came through a play-off to win in 2009, the year Sunningdale was voted the second best course in England.
