Johnson confronts heckler at BMW Championship
Zach verbally confronts spectator in grandstand at back of 18
ZACH JOHNSON has taken to Twitter to explain his verbal confrontation with a spectator behind the 18th green after his third round of the BWW Championship.
After the 2007 Masters champion missed his birdie attempt on the closing par-5 at Conway Farms to finish three shots behind 54-hole leader Jim Furyk heading into today's final round, a fan shouted “Zach, you suck!”
Johnson then looked back in the direction of the fan before moving to clean up the putt and finish his round.
Playing partner Nick Watney, also not happy with what was shouted, then finished up as well, and looked back toward the fan. After a cordial handshake, the two players and their respective caddies pointed at and started walking toward the offending fan.
Then Johnson and Watney went a step further, confronting the heckler in the stands as they walked off the green.
Johnson tweeted on his official Twitter page @ZachJohnsonPGA: "Just to clarify, what was said on 18 didn’t affect me or my game.
"However, when there’s children around, we had to acknowledge and pursue the individual. I forgive him. Unfortunately, with kids around, action was necessary. Saying that, the fans have been awesome all week!"
About an hour before this incident, Sergio Garcia, playing alongside Tiger Woods, was distracted by a fan who shouted out 'Go Tiger' during his backswing.
These incidents come just a month after Ian Poulter said he wants to 'tazer every muppet' at a professional golf tournament.
