Garcia gives press conference from hospital room as wife goes into labour
Garcia talked Masters defence from Austin hospital with wife due to give birth to girl.
Reigning Masters champion Sergio Garcia was forced to give a press conference from a hospital room in Austin, Texas, after his wife went into labour yesterday.
The Spaniard linked up with journalists via conference call to talk about winning the Green Jacket last year, his first major triumph.
"It has been an eventful morning,'' Garcia said. "But you know, she's doing well, so it's kind of very, very exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time.'
"It's kind of surreal, I guess you may say. It's a different feeling. I am excited and a little bit nervous for Angela and the baby to make sure everything goes well. It's funny how the timing...it was supposed to be on Sunday, but it looks like she's coming a little bit early, and we're excited. Everything looks good. We can't wait.''
Garcia is coming off a T4 finish at the Valspar Championship, and planned to play the WGC Dell Technology Match Play before his defence at Augusta.
"I've probably said it, you don't realise...I mean, you know how big the Masters is, but when you win it, you realise how much bigger it is all over the world," he said.
"It's definitely gotten where...people recognise me a little bit more all over the place outside of the golf course, and also, there's more interest in me. It's been a lot of fun."
