Wilson Staff reveals D-FY iron/hybrid set
Innovative steel-graphite shaft fusing in new launch
Wilson Staff is claiming an 'equipment first' with the innovative half-graphite-half-steel shaft in its latest combination set of Wilson Staff D-FY irons and hybrids aimed at the higher handicap golfer looking to improve distance while maintaining accuracy.
Its 'Half-and-Half' shaft design, inspired by previously used baseball bat technology ,fuses the responsiveness of steel at the tip with the lightweight and vibration-dampening properties of graphite at the butt end - an opposite approach to Adams' Tight Lies GT irons launched in 2000 which featured graphite at the tip.
The steel-tip shafts are combined in the D-FY irons with an innovative selection of utility clubs, wide-soled mid-irons and perimeter-weighted cavity-back short irons to deliver improved performance for players with low- to mid-speed swings.
Weighing in at only 76 grams, Wilson engineers claim steel tip section provides flex stability and low torque at the hosel for straighter shots from miss-hits, while the graphite portion increases swing speed and improves distance. The junction where the two materials join also reduces vibration.
The steel/graphite technology is inspired by the Demarini baseball bat – a high-performance two-piece composite bat made of two fused materials to make it both lightweight and responsive.
The eight-piece D-FY set comprises a 19.5 degree FY club and a No.4 ?4-hybrid from the new FYbrid HS range. The 5- and 6- iron are 'super-wide sole' mid-irons with hollow core designs to hit the ball higher and longer. The set also features 7-iron to pitching wedge cavity-back short irons for maximum forgiveness in scoring club range, costs £549.99 and has gap wedge and sand iron options available as separate purchases.
