Wilson Staff marks centenary with iconic clubs
Modern versions of classic blades and putters highlight brand heritage
WILSON STAFF marked its centennial anniversary and 61st consecutive appearance at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando today by introducing modern versions of two of the most iconic golf clubs in the history of the game - Dynapower irons and the 8802 putter.
Celebrating the fact that Wilson has been incorporated as a sporting goods company since 1914, the Wilson Golf division of the Chicago-based brand has selected these two clubs to illustrate the game-changing innovation that helped to deliver a record 61 Major titles.
The Wilson Staff FG Tour 100 forged set of irons reflect the evolution of bladed clubs with their classic, timeless design features. The modern 3-piece button-back head of the clubs emulate the style of the legendary 1971 Dynapower blades.
A Fluid Feel bore-through insert paired with a milled face, scorelines and topline provide the ultimate in consistency and feel for the better player. While vintage triple knurling on the hosel and a long, gold-red-gold ringed ferule, add to the blade’s classic features. The forged 8620 carbon steel and nickel-chrome plating combined with a high polish mirror finish complete the classy look of the new blades.
The FG Tour 100 iron set (3-PW) will be available from mid-February with a True Temper Dynamic Gold (R300, S300) shaft and Lamkin Crossline Black grip at RRP £799.
These new clubs for accomplished players are added to the Wilson Staff D-100 family of game improvement clubs and the new Wilson Staff C-100 irons for those players looking to shape their shots on a more consistent basis.
The new Wilson Staff 8802 putter continues the heritage of the original Wilson Staff milled putter that won multiple Major championships in the hands of some of the best putters in history. With the same elegant, heel-shafted head shape, the new 8802 model is milled from 304 stainless steel for the ultimate in precision and feel with a double-milled facing for a flat surface that delivers a true roll on the green.
Designed with a head weight of 335 grams to match modern-day green speeds and ball construction, the putter comes with an updated stepless, flare-tip True Temper Head Speed shaft with traditional flutes as well as a Lamkin 3GEN smooth Pistol grip. The putter is available at RRP £129.
These legendary clubs are presented in packaging carrying the vintage Wilson Staff shield and script, which will also appear on Centennial Pro Tour golf bags during the first half of the year.
“Our main focus this year lies in our new product launches, but there is just too much history to pass through our centenary year without celebrating it,” said Tim Clarke, General Manager of Wilson Golf.
“Clubs like the FG Tour 100 blades and 8802 putters will revive a lot of memories, but also show the modern golfer why Wilson Staff has remained such a strong brand in golf for so long.”
