Watney kick starts season with Titleist

American trusts full bag of Titleist bats to fly to top of FedEx Cup standings

Watney kick starts season with Titleist

Nick Watney trusted a full bag of Titleist equipment to claim his first title in more than 13 months at The Barclays.

Despite recording just three top-ten finishes in 2012 on the eve of the opening event of FedEx Cup Playoffs, the 31-year-old chose the perfect week to kickstart his season as his three-shot victory vaulted him from 49th to first in the FedEx Cup standings.

He also enters the fray as a potential American wildcard pick for next month's Ryder Cup at Medinah.

Starting the final round two shots off the lead, Watney took a stranglehold on the event with three birdies in the space of four holes from the seventh, highlighted by a stunning right-to-left putt from 30-feet at the par-3 eighth and exquisite approach to four-feet at the tricky par-4 10th.

Watney averaged 300 yards off the tee and found 70% of the fairways at Bethpage Black with his Titleist 913D3 driver and Titleist 910F fairway woods. He also performed admirably with his Titleist 712 AP2 irons by tying for second in greens in regulation on 75%.

“I feel like this win validates the direction I'm going,” said the five-time PGA Tour champion.

“I'm very pleased with how I drove the ball coming down the stretch and hitting 17 greens in the final round. Even though I had a lot of three-putts, I putted really, really well.”

Watney, who strolled home in the comfort of the FJ Sport and Titleist Players glove, ranked 11th in putts per greens in regulation with an average of 1.722 wielding his Scotty Cameron Newport on the lightning fast greens.
