Schwartzel caps season in style with Nike
In-form South African sets third biggest winning margin in European Tour history
Nike staffer Charl Schwartzel completed his formiddable finish to 2012 with a scintillating 12-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
The 29-year-old South African, who claimed his first title in 19 months with an 11-shot triumph at the Thailand Golf Championship a week ago, achieved the third biggest winning margin in European Tour history at Leopard Creek.
Ten shots clear with a round to play, Schwartzel added a 3-under 69 either side of a two-hour thunderstorm delay to take his eighth Tour title with a 24-under winning total.
“It's nice to have continued my form from last week,” said the 2011 Masters champion, who has finished 5-3-2-1-1 in his last five events, while accumulating a combined score of 84-under during that period.
“I was saying a month and a half ago it's been a pretty disappointing year. Slowly and surely I started to swing the club a lot better, back to how I did when I won The Masters, and I actually got excited to play again.
“It started at the SA Open and from there got better and better. It's been a pretty good year now!”
Sporting a full bag of Nike equipment, the newly-promoted World No.14, who moves to the top of the 2013 Race to Dubai, finished inside the top-20 in every statistic, including third in driving distance with his VR Pro Ltd driver on 307 yards and fourth in greens in regulation with his VR Pro blades on 83%.
It was also another solid week for fellow Nike Golf staffer Scott Jamieson who finished in a tie for third off the back of his maiden victory at the Nelson Mandela Championship.
