England's Lottie Woad birdied three of the last four holes, including back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18, to become the first European to win the Augusta National Women's Amateur.

Woad, 20, was trailing by a shot standing on the 17th tee but she went on to birdie the final two holes to earn her place in the record books at Augusta National.

The Surrey-born Florida State sophomore poured home a birdie from inside of 20 feet on the 18th to card a round of 3-under 69 and defeat Bailey Shoemaker by a shot.

Woad finished the 54-hole event on 8-under par.

Shoemaker, who started the final round four shots behind Woad, took consolation from firing a flawless 66 for the lowest final round in ANWA history.

Woad now becomes the first European winner in the ANWA's short five-year history.

"It means so much, I watched this event when I was younger so I always wanted to play in it. I wanted to try and contend but to win it is special," said Woad.

"I had a great caddie with me, my England Golf coach who helped me stay in the moment, but I just tried to enjoy and embrace it."

Former US Open champion Justin Rose, European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald and Sky Sports Golf host Nick Dougherty were all quick to react on Woad's victory on social media.
