NHL ref qualifies for US Open; Beef, Scott also among Monday qualifiers

NHL referee and Canadian golfer Garrett Rank has qualified for this month's US Open at Shinnecock Hills after finishing joint first in a Monday sectional qualifier in Georgia. 

The ice hockey ref joins a number of star names making their way into golf's second major of the year, with notables including Adam Scott, Andrew 'Beef' Johnston, Matt Wallace, Steve Stricker and Keegan Bradley. 

Rank shot 2-under over the 36-hole event to earn one of the three spots available at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek Course near Roswell, Ga.

Four notables who failed to come through qualifying were Billy Horschel, Ryan Moore and 2018 European Ryder Cup vice-captains Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington.
