Zebra putters are, in my opinion, one of the most criminally underrated brands in the game. The brand has been creating putters since 1976 and has a number of major wins to its name.
In 2020, legendary putter designer Austie Rollinson was brought on board to bring the brand back to its former glory. Since then, the brand has been producing some truly exceptional putters at very competitive prices.
The most recent launch from Zebra is the milled series. I've been fortunate enough to get my hands on a couple of models from the new line, and in this review, we will be focusing on the 003, which is a wide-blade design.
To find out how the putter performed, I took it down to the Zen putting green at Golf Groove in Wimbledon to put it under the microscope.
Let's get into it.
Player Level
Typically, I would encourage beginner golfers to opt for a slightly higher MOI mallet design, but I have to say the forgiveness on offer from the 003 has led me to believe a golfer of any ability could use it. The roll is pure, as mentioned, the forgiveness is great, and the feel is five-star.
Zebra Milled Series 003 Looks and Feel
The wide blade design of the 003 is timeless and sat behind the ball it looks lovely. Zebra's instantly recognisable alignment aid sits just behind the ball, and thanks to the highlighted single white stripe, it's very easy to line up with any golf ball.
The matte black finish looks very premium and will really appeal to golfers who hate to see any glare off the top of their putter.
In terms of profile, there are certainly more confidence inspiring options on the market in 2024, but I have to say, despite being a blade, there is still plenty of meat behind the ball.
The sole design has been kept very simple, and I have to say, it's one of the cleanest looking putters I've seen from the brand.
The Zebra logo contrasts beautifully against the black finish, and the addition of subtle zebra stripes on the weights is a lovely nod to the brand's name.
Milled from a single billet of carbon steel, this putter feels as good as it looks. The fine milling on the face produces a very soft sensation at impact, and the noise that accompanies it is decidedly muted compared to other putters I've tested this year.
Despite being soft, the head does produce quite a lively pop from the middle of the face, and when I hit some putts out of the toe, there was a good amount of feedback, with a noticeable loss in liveliness.
All in all, I have to say the experience of using the 003 was a wholly enjoyable one. It feels and looks very luxurious, while still delivering the type of haptic and audio feedback that top players will really enjoy.
Zebra Milled Series 003 Performance and Forgiveness
The beauty of testing on a Zen putting green is you know that the surface won't let you get away with anything. If a putt is bad then it will be punished without any help from a bobble or too to keep the ball on line.
I hit numerous putts with the 003, altering the slope and and direction every five or so minutes.
Once I got the speed of the surface down, I was really impressed with just how repeatable my stroke was with this putter.
I do normally favour mallet putters for their stability, but the 003 delivered a smooth and consistent roll time and time again.
Keeping the putter square through the stroke is something I often struggle with when using a blade putter, but I have to say the stability on offer from the 003 is top notch.
As previously mentioned, out of the middle of the face, this putter produces a very consistent and solid roll, but I was keen to test out the level of forgiveness on offer, so hit some intentional putts right out of the toe and heel.
After hitting some real howlers, I discovered that while line still stayed very consistent, there was a drop off in weight, with most putts coming up around six inches to a foot shorter than from the centre of the face.
In all honesty, I thought it would be more, so the design team at Zebra gets a big pat on the back from me.
All in all the 003 is a very impressive putter. From feel down to forgiveness, you can tell a lot of time and thought went into the design of this range.
Should you buy a Zebra Milled Series 003 Putter?
The putter market is absolutely stacked at the moment and despite perhaps not being the first name you would think of when buying a new flat stick, the Zebra Milled Series range should certainly be high on your list of considerations.
These putters feel great, perform well, and also come in at a very competitive price point. What's not to love.
