PING has arguably been the brand to beat when it comes to drivers in recent years, with the G430 range being a dominant force on Tour and a go-to for fitters worldwide.
To kick off 2025, we now have the G440 range, which features three new models: the Max, LS and SFT.

Weight saving is the key tech story this year, with PING having reduced the head weight, which allows for the movable weight at the back of the head to be increased to a whopping 29g.
PING has also introduced a new thinner, shallower face, which they claim is faster across the entire hitting surface.

To find out how the G440 Max performed, I took it down to Custom Golf Works to gather some data, before putting it through its paces out on the course.
Let’s get into it.
Player Level
The G440 Max is a fantastic blend of forgiveness, playability and speed, making it an excellent choice for golfers of all abilities. If you have an exceptionally high swing speed, the LS may be a better fit, but this is a great driver for golfers of all abilities.
PING G440 Max Looks and Feel
The G440 Max is quintessentially PING. From the large branding on the sole to the carbon crown with turbulators, everything about this driver is exactly what you would expect from the brand.
Returning to the blue colourway that was so popular in both the G30 and G series drivers, the 440 has real nostalgia while still providing a very modern feel that has brought the look up to date.
Down at address, the 440 Max has a very confidence-inspiring look behind the ball that fans of PING will know and love, featuring turbulators across the front and a split texture design with a carbon finish taking up the rear half of the crown.
Flip the club over, and you’re greeted with a big PING logo splashed across a gloss central panel flanked by matte wings featuring the classic blue previously mentioned.
PING has by no means reinvented the wheel with this design, but it looks sleek, stealthy and very premium.
In terms of feel and sound, the G440 is very similar to the G430; it’s punchy, explosive, and has a striking sensation that stays in the hands.
The acoustics are also spot on, and PING has continued to remedy the slightly tinny sound that many people disliked about the G425.
PING G440 Performance and Forgiveness
In years gone by, I’ve been critical of PING because despite providing ample forgiveness, their drivers do tend to be slightly slower than other options on the market. However, thanks to a new, thinner face on the G440, that problem seems to be a distant memory.
As you might be able to tell from the table above, I was able to get a real shift on with the G440, and not only is this driver fast from across the face, but it’s also very forgiving.
The adjustable weight on the back is also nothing new, but thanks to the increased weight, it allows you to quickly and easily manipulate your ball flight with instant results.
I typically carry my driver between 255-270 on a good day, but with the G440 I was able to launch the ball that extra bit higher, which resulted in an average carry distance tipping over the 275-yard mark, which was a real highlight from my testing.
As a result of the higher ball flight, I did notice the ball wasn’t rolling out quite as far, but I was still able to get the ball to finish just shy of the much sought-after 300 mark, which was good to see.
In terms of manipulation, I did find this driver slightly harder to flight down than other models I’ve tested this year, but that extra launch will undoubtedly benefit a wide range of golfers.
Forgiveness has always been one of PING’s strong suits, and the G440 is no different; from low or high on the face and out of the perimeter, this driver does a fantastic job of keeping your ball on the shorter grass.
Should you buy the PING G440 Max Driver?
If you have a PING G430 or G425, I would recommend saving your money, as the improvement in performance isn’t stark enough to warrant parting ways with your hard-earned cash.
However, if you’re currently gaming a driver that’s four or five years old, then the G440 Max is one of the best options on the market in 2025 and well worth your consideration.
The G440 offers power, forgiveness, and really lovely looks, making it a fantastic all-rounder.
