Matthieu Pavon jumped out to an early lead Thursday at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club after firing an impressive 8-under par 63 at the Italian Open on the DP World Tour.
Pavon, 30, had an early three-stroke lead after a nearly bogey-free performance at the 2023 Ryder Cup host venue.
He was bogey-free through 16 holes before making a four at the par-3 17th. He made six birdies alone in his front nine.
Pavon has never been named to a European Ryder Cup Team, but he could be making a case for himself this week at Marco Simone.
The Rome-based course is set to host the Ryder Cup in late September.
