Championship Golf & Modern Wellbeing at Camiral Golf & Wellness

Nestled amidst the rolling hills and verdant landscapes of Catalonia, Spain, Camiral Golf & Wellness, previously known as PGA Catalunya, beckons discerning travellers to immerse themselves in a world of unparalleled beauty and sophistication.

During my recent visit, I discovered a harmonious blend of opulence, serenity, and attentive service that surpassed all my expectations. I've also never come across a golf resort that offers so much in terms of wellbeing as well as some high-class golf to refine my game.

Upon arrival, I was greeted with a very warm welcome and most of the Atletico Madrid football team, which was a welcome surprise, as it's not very often you nearly stand on the toes of a number of sporting legends. 

So, I knew this place was not to be taken lightly. This resort is a hub used by both elite athletes and casual golfers alike, which should set the tone for the trip as we all know footballers like a lot of pampering.

After my initial shock and awe on entering the premises, I was escorted to my extremely modern and tasteful room in the five-star Hotel Camiral, part of The Leading Hotels of the World collection, where every detail had been meticulously curated to ensure a sublime experience. 

The spaciousness of the deluxe suite, adorned with contemporary furnishings, provided a sanctuary of comfort and refinement. Once I had wrestled with the electric blinds (after 15 years in the job, I still struggle with varying remote controls), I was offered a panoramic view of the Pyrenees mountains, lush golf course, and glistening swimming pool, instantly inviting me to unwind in serene seclusion and take it all in for a moment.

Next stop, we golf! Voted the No. 1 Golf Resort in Spain, Camiral Golf & Wellness is home to two golf courses, including the acclaimed Stadium Course, consistently ranked among the best in Europe, and its sister course, the Tour. Home to the Spanish Open on three occasions, the resort is a regular venue for DP World Tour tournaments. With its well-equipped, hi-tech practice facilities and superb natural setting - it’s the perfect golf getaway.

As an avid golfer, I was eager to explore Camiral's two acclaimed championship courses, both renowned for their impeccable design, pristine conditioning, and breathtaking vistas. From the moment I stepped onto the first tee, I was captivated by the sheer beauty and challenge of the courses. The meticulously manicured, tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and lightning-fast greens offered a stimulating test of skill, while the tranquil surroundings and views of the Montseny Massif mountain range imbued each round with a sense of serenity and relaxation.

Complementing the two championship golf courses is The Golf Hub – one of the most extensive and advanced practice facilities I’ve ever seen at a golf resort. From a new Trackman Range, a 2,000 square-meter chipping green, three putting greens, and a golf academy with GEARS technology, it’s a golfer’s playground and a great amenity for golfers, non-golfers and families looking to work on their game.

Modern Wellness

After a day on the course, my back was killing me (nothing to do with the king-sized bed I slept in for a straight 10 hours, but more my ageing golf swing), so I was very much looking forward to indulging in the rejuvenating offerings of Camiral's state-of-the-art 1,000 square-meter Wellness Centre where a world of serenity and relaxation awaited.

From soothing massages to revitalising facials, each treatment was expertly administered by skilled therapists, using natural, organic products and techniques to promote holistic well-being. The tranquil ambiance of the intimate spa, complemented by serene music and subtle aromatic scents, provided a haven of tranquillity where stress melted away, leaving me feeling utterly refreshed and revitalised.

One unforgettable moment came from using the cryotherapy chamber. As someone with slight dread at standing in -110 degrees Celsius for any amount of time, I was very nervous but put completely at ease by our extremely friendly therapist. Her best relaxing technique for four middle-aged men was telling us to sing and dance. 

We decided to play 'New Order - Blue Monday' to get those feet moving and the heart rate pumping—a very different experience from applying the same moves as I did in the 90s on some very sticky pub floors—but it had the same effect and nonetheless euphoria, a tone that stuck with me throughout my trip.

Let's Talk Food

The culinary journey at Camiral was nothing short of extraordinary, with a diverse array of dining options to tantalise the senses and satisfy the palate. Hotel Camiral’s 1477 restaurant showcases the finest locally sourced ingredients. When I say local, they use herbs and vegetables grown on-site in their organic Kitchen Garden to highlight their latest and innovative culinary techniques and embody their sustainable ethos, which is key to the venue and future plans.

Whether savouring a delectable tasting menu at the signature restaurant, Mediterranean-inspired dishes at the more relaxed Bella’s, indulging in light bites and cocktails at the poolside bar, or enjoying a post-round bite to eat at The Club Café, every dining experience was a celebration of flavour, artistry, and local Catalonian cuisine—and don’t forget to try the resort’s own organic eco-wine!

Service Excellence

Throughout my stay, the hallmark of Camiral was its unwavering commitment to service excellence. From the dedicated concierge who anticipated my every need to the attentive waitstaff who ensured a seamless dining experience, every interaction was characterised by warmth, professionalism, and genuine hospitality. Whether arranging tee times, organising off-site excursions, or simply offering a friendly smile and word of welcome, the staff at Camiral consistently exceeded expectations, ensuring that my stay was nothing short of extraordinary.
